Friends,

This week is another great week for Hallmark and 1-800 Flowers. You know, Mother's Day. Sorry for the sarcasm. I just sometimes wonder if we have lost the true meaning of what we do in light of the potential profits to be made.

Have you ever considered the origins of our Mother's Day celebrations? This day of recognition has is its roots in medieval as well as early Christian celebrations. However, it originated in the United States in 1908 in a Methodist Church. Anna Jarvis wanted to celebrate her mother who had organized women's groups to promote public health. She held the first celebration Sunday at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. She began a campaign in 1905 to make it a recognized holiday and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared it a National Holiday.

We celebrate mothers the second Sunday in May every year. It is nice to set aside a day to do so but I encourage you to celebrate them every day. Remember the mothers that have gone ahead of us but gave us so much when they were with us. Look around you at all the mothers (birth mothers, adoptive mothers, mentors, encouragers) that are still with us continuing the work that has been done forever. Look around you at the women that want so badly to be mothers but cannot conceive. Look around you at all the wonderful women of this world and thank them for the wisdom they impart, the love they embody, the friendships they share, the care that they give, and the Christlike way they present themselves.

Pray for them all. Not just on Mother's Day but every day. God holds a special place in his heart for the ones that nurture us and continue to push us forward in his name.

God bless you. See you Sunday
