Monday Musings by Pastor Ron - June 8, 2026

Friends,

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" Do you remember being asked that question when you were young? How many of you were quick with an answer? I want to be a doctor. I want to be an astronaut. I want to be a teacher. I want to be an architect. That was my answer. How many of you became what you wanted to be? I did. I never wavered from that desire. I never wavered from my vision of becoming an architect. And I was blessed to practice architecture for over forty years.

Yet sometimes, God has a different vision for us than we do. Just look at Abraham. He was happy living with his wife and family in Haran. But that wasn't God's vision for him. He was called to leave and move somewhere God planned for him. To a place where he would become the father of great nation and would bless everyone around him.

Just look at Moses. He was happy (well mostly) living as a shepherd for forty years in Midian. Until God called him to move somewhere God planned for him. To a place where he would settle all of God's people.

Just look at me. Retired from architecture. Happy in retirement until I finally recognized that God had been calling me for a long time and was calling me to a new place. Calling me to Houston Trinity to serve God's people.

Houston Trinity, vision is important for the church as well. It takes vision to achieve. It takes vision to keep moving toward the goal that you have set in place. That is what keeps all of us moving forward. Solomon wrote that without vision we are lost. If we can't see what God is doing, we stumble. We will soon embark on an effort to discern God's call upon our congregation. We, like Abraham, like Moses, like many others of Scripture have been comfortable in our ways for almost thirty years. But the world around us has changed. The world's view of the church has changed. The reasons people want to be part of the church have changed. We have changed. It is time for us to discern God's plan for us for the years to come. It is time for us to see what God wants us to become. It is time to hear God calling us into a new beginning just as He did Abraham.

My prayer is that we will listen intently to the Holy Spirit guiding us through our visioning workshops, that we will discern the vision that God has for Houston Trinity, and that we will respond the way that Abraham did: "and he went".

God bless you. See you Sunday
